WHAT CAN BE DONE?
NOT MUCHâ¦
Nothing will come of nothing:
speak again.
King Lear, Act I, Scene 1
This is not a cynical piece of advice. Sometimes, the situation is unbelievably awful, but it may just pass. Of course you may not want to let it just pass, and thatâs understandable. And doing nothing does not in any way obviate the need to discuss the problem with someone in authority who will listen; but it could be that the evil executive may leave, may be treading ever thinner ground, or may be losing power or support within the organization.
If you are able to look at the executive as a person, seeing his strengths and weaknesses, good traits (if any), you are now ready to understand themânot excuse them or accept them, but understand them a bit more. Such people are who they are and itâs not your job to change them, even if you could. No matter what you do, they are unlikely to change as much as youâd likeâif at all. Change only happens when a person wants to change. It is not within your control.
Maturity, in part, means accepting things for what they are. Wasting time being angry at the sky for being blue is crazy. So why waste time being angry with an executive who is harmful to others or to you? Why should you wait to find out? Tolerating abuse is never acceptable. But people canât always easily walk away from a job. And acceptance doesnât mean smiling while someone hurts you. You should defend yourself and take actions to improve the situation.
Hereâs a thing that can help to make you a bit happier. Never accept a monkey on your shoulder. Monkeys? People like depositing problems on other people. What on earth does this mean and whatâs it got to do with monkeys? Well, visualize a monkey, maybe two or even three. Each monkey represents a serious concern, a trouble, an aggravation, a problem, a nasty something that is an irritation, a concern. And somebody has given you the monkey and youâve accepted it. Maybe you felt obliged to accept it. Maybe you felt that you had no choice but to accept it. Well, if someone gives you a problem or tells you that your work stinks over and over, imagine that each issue is a monkey and that itâs been put on your shoulder and wonât move. But that doesnât mean you have to keep these monkeys. They are not lovely and cuddly. They are nasty. They are not yours at all, so get rid of them. Donât accept them. Give them back. If you donât, then the annoying, anguish-causing monkeys will continue to irritate. Donât accept monkeys. Tell the owner that you wonât accept the problem. Easy to say, hard to do. But, know this: when it works, you will feel better.
