One of the most important factors in whether or not a boy succeeds in school has nothing to do with academics. It is a child's perception of whether or not the teacher likes him that influences his desire to learn. Children must feel a sense of belonging and connectedness in the classroom in order to work hard and learn well.

Boys love action. Whether it's in the front yard or on the movie screen, it is action that is engaging and exciting. (Many experts believe that television and video games have actually shortened children's attention spans and reduced their abilities to succeed at school.) Unfortunately for most boys, life in the classroom is pretty dull. In fact, some experts believe that boys need as many as five recess periods each day to keep their focus on academic work. Sadly, recess is usually the first thing taken away from a boy who misbehaves or fails to complete his assignments. A boy is required to sit obediently in his seat for hours at a time, listening quietly and following instructions. Moving around the classroom is frowned upon, as are the sort of pranks and play that so many boys love.

Boys often do best with activities that are tailored to their more active approach to learning. Girls, on the other hand, may prefer to learn by observing and listening. Few teachers (and almost no school curricula) emphasize a hands-on learning style. And not surprisingly, boys often complain that school is boring.

In Real Boys, William Pollack, PhD, speaks about the need to “guy-ify” our schools, making them a more inviting place for boys:“Boys, just like girls, do best in schools that give them the chance to participate in learning activities that correspond to their personal interests and competencies, enabling them to sound their authentic voices and thrive as individuals.” Every student, regardless of gender or ability, should be able to feel a sense of belonging and significance in the classroom. While school may not always be fun, it should never be humiliating, shaming, or discouraging.
