“The Tastiest Bookmarks on the Web”

The original social bookmarking service was del.icio.us, which was founded in 2003 by Joshua Schachter, and acquired by Yahoo! two years later. In a 2004 interview with engineer and author Michael Lopps on his Rands in Repose blog, Schachter explained the origins of the name: “I'd registered the domain when .us opened the registry, and a quick test showed me the six letter suffixes that let me generate the most words. In early discussions, a friend referred to finding good links as ‘eating cherries’ and the metaphor stuck, I guess.”

That awkward and oh-so geeky construction was changed to Delicious.com when a redesigned version of the site (popularly known as Delicious 2.0) was launched in 2008. A year later, Delicious claimed to have reached 9.5 million users and more than 180 million bookmarks.
