Carter threw the unopened bottle onto the passenger seat of his car and peeled out of the driveway. The rubber of the tires bounced against the gravel of the driveway that still had yet to be paved. There was likely no point to it now. As soon as the divorce papers were signed, Carter would sell this place and be done with it and the horrible memories it held.

The sun had set now as he made his way onto the pitch-black roads in the area. A place this rural didn’t have street lamps, which was fine by him. The darkness matched the color of his heart. He didn’t have a destination. He just wanted to drive so he didn’t have to think.

As the miles scrolled through his odometer, his mind began to clear as he began to process everything that had just happened. He rolled down the windows to his sedan and let the salt air of the Bay waft through the car. He breathed in deeply as he weaved the car around the twisting back roads.

Carter knew he wasn’t properly feeling the pain right now. Or at least he figured that must be the reason he wasn’t feeling sad or angry or upset. In some ways, he was relieved. Relieved that he didn’t have to try to make her happy anymore.

Nothing he ever did had seemed to make her happy.

And the demands only got bigger and bigger.

As the returns became less and less.

It was exhausting.

And he was done.

This was what Ben had been trying to warn him against all those years ago. He should have listened to his friend. He should have seen the signs then, but he had been so focused on doing what was right for his family.

He’d always been that way.

Carter had let his father trick him into greater and greater sacrifices as a way to make up for the fact that he’d been the cause of his mother’s death.

Nothing was ever going to fill that void for his father.

And nothing was ever going to fill that void for him.

But instead of coming to terms with the fact that she was gone and trying to move forward and build a family she could have been proud of, Sean pushed his pain and insecurities onto his son.

And Carter had fallen for it.

The only thing that had ever given him true happiness growing up had been boxing. He went to the gym after school every day and being in the ring was the only time he’d ever felt truly alive. Facing off against an opponent, not knowing the outcome, testing your strength and reflexes, it was exhilarating.

But he’d given all that up.

For Sean.

For Candace.

For his family.

And for what?

So his father could drive the company into debt and cash out his shares before the investors found out?

So his wife could cheat on him and claim it was his fault?

What sort of family was that?

He growled in frustration as he revved the car’s engine, before banking hard around a left turn.
