Low Progesterone

Progesterone is a natural muscle relaxant, so when levels are high, your muscles are loose, allowing for easy movement of waste along your pipeline. For this reason, many women struggle with constipation right after ovulation when progesterone levels are low, just beginning their natural rise. In perimenopause and menopause, progesterone levels decline, so you may experience more loose stools, diarrhea, or bloating as bowel activity adjusts.

Thyroid Hormone Imbalance

Thyroid issues are common in women during perimenopause and menopause, with an imbalance in thyroid hormones often the source of digestive problems. Thyroid hormones directly influence metabolism and digestion. Too much (hyperthyroidism) may speed things up, resulting in diarrhea and indigestion, while too little (hypothyroidism) slows things down, causing constipation, stomach pain, and bloating.

Several studies have linked thyroid issues with an increased likelihood of developing digestive issues, including celiac disease and IBD. One of the most interesting discoveries is the connection between hypothyroidism and SIBO, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, a serious condition that causes pain and diarrhea and significantly compromises the health of the gut microbiome. This study found that more than half (54 percent) of people with a low-functioning thyroid also tested positive for SIBO. We can’t overlook the gut when healing the thyroid.
