The water (or waters) of Kauthar, which Rumi mentions often in his writings, is a reference to a fountain in Paradise which is the subject of an eponymous surah in the Qur’an, Surah 108, Al-Kauthar or Abundance. As before, the implication here is that the Divine Command ‘take off thy shoes’ is a call to Moses to cast off the dualism of the two worlds. In doing so, he will discover his true nature and the infinite abundance that lies within him. But as Rumi reminds us in other poems from the Divan, when he is talking about Moses, he is referring to our own inner reality.

Who is there who .

. . . like Moses looking for fire,

comes across a bush,

goes to gather fire from it,

and discovers myriad dawns and sunrises.

(D 598: A1:74)

Come, O soul! You are Moses,

your bodily form is your staff:

grasp hold of me, I am a staff;

thrown me down, I am a serpent.

(D 1414: A1:172)
