Using the Blessings

These steps are the heart of the ritual, the climax, the reason for the ritual to be. They are an intricate give-and-take between humans and deities, complex and mystical. They are also the most misunderstood steps of Wiccan ritual. Get a dozen books on Wicca, and you’ll be likely to find a dozen different versions of the timing for when Cakes and Wine (for example) is performed. Yet you’ll get fewer than a dozen explanations for why it’s performed, because most books seem to leave that out entirely. You’ll find rituals where some of these steps are left out, or presented in a different order, in virtually every book on the shelf. Even during my training, when I was learning how to cast a circle and what it all means, there was considerable confusion about where to place spellwork in the ritual, and whether Cakes and Wine should be performed before or after a seasonal rite, and so on. Neither book learning nor traditional lore really covers these questions.

What I’m presenting here is unique and original. It is the conclusion I’ve reached after learning from many Pagan and Wiccan teachers, reading many books, casting innumerable circles, studying and meditating. I am utterly convinced that this order is the proper and best way for a Wiccan to worship the gods, and the most in keeping with the goals of worship and magic. It is this structure that aligns Wiccan ritual with the underlying structure of most religious ritual.61 It is this structure that makes the energy flow best in the circle, giving Wiccans what we need, empowering the magic, and truly and deeply reaching the gods.

This is one of those rare occasions in which I’ll step away from the “do-it-yourself ” belief that underlies much of Wicca and say that the order shown above is the best way to do it. You hardly ever hear that in a religion in which there are multiple truths and multiple ways of being correct, but just because we believe in a plurality of right answers doesn’t mean there aren’t any wrong answers. It turns out that there are lots and lots of ways of performing ritual that dissipate your energy, disempower your magic, and fail to make the vital connection to sacredness. There is, however, a structure that years of practice and study have convinced me works.
