Senator Mike Mansfield, who was the majority leader in the U.S. Senate longer than any other man, joined the Navy when he was just fourteen and went off to fight in World War I. It was exciting. He was a young boy from Montana serving his country and seeing the world. When his hitch was up, he transferred to the Army and did another year in France before again transferring to the Marine Corps, where he served in combat in the Philippines. Eventually, he retired from the service and, still a very young man, returned to his home in Montana, where he began the long political career that would make him one of Washington’s most powerful political figures. He was quite literally the confidant of presidents and kings. But it was his Marine Corps experience that stuck with him.

When he died, at the age of ninety-one, he was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Anyone can go to visit his grave. It has a simple granite headstone, just one among thousands of others like it. At his request, his epitaph reads simply, “Michael Mansfield, PFC U.S. Marines.”

After an incredibly full and eventful life that had taken him to the heights of power and into the center of history, that was all he felt he needed to say for posterity to understand him. He was a marine. That was enough.
