She heard Max cry, “The portal shut already!”

And Quinn said, “I think it’s Anna! It has Anna’s hair!”

“Stop petting me,” she said as the beam of the Slate flashlight bounced around a low-ceilinged room. She tried to climb to her feet, but the floor wanted to make her stumble sideways.

She whispered a light cantrip. The air sparked uselessly. She frowned, got pissed, and pumped more energy into her demand. A grapefruit-sized ball of light appeared above the three of them.

Both boys gaped at the light instead of her, which seemed the less surprising thing. It gave her time to look around. Were they in an attic? Only the floor sloped horribly, and all the attic-type junk was shattered into pieces at the bottom of the slope.

“I guess that settles that,” Max whispered, still staring at the light. When he looked down at Anna, there was an expression on his face she couldn’t decipher. There was a lot of worry in it, and some awe, and maybe even he was a little happy, because he rushed over and hugged her.

“You’re okay?” he whispered.

“Yes. The Fool said I could help.” Max’s look told her that her presence was not a help at all, though, which stung harder than she’d thought. “Max. I can help, really. Don’t be mad I’m here. Please?”

He pushed away a bit and continued to stare at her, his arms on her forearms. Finally, after what felt like a short-long time, he nodded.

“You were waiting for some sign that things had started happening,” Max said to Quinn.

“Oh, this is totally that sign,” Quinn agreed.

“Right. So here’s what we’re going to do,” Max said. “We’ve been trained for field action, and we’re going to fall back on that training. People down here are hurt, and Rune needs our help. Tell us everything, Anna.”
