I take a breath just outside the master bedroom, trying to gather myself. I may pretend it’s about the money for Vi and Eden, but I’ve never had money, wouldn’t know what to do with it. Before any more dumb thoughts swish into my mind, I push the clean, white wooden door aside and stifle a gasp.

This she notices. Quick as a whippet, she spins, almost smacking me in the jaw — dark waves flaring out in a silky arc. Unlike Eden, she’s clearly not used to wearing such towering footwear.
