CHAPTER 15
Alcohol Steadies My Nerves
It was one of those very hot days that we pray for during winter and curse in the summer. The ventilation system wasn’t used to coping with such weather and neither were the clients in the group, so the door and windows were wide open. Suddenly the door slammed and the lady who sat opposite me jumped two feet in the air. She was clearly at rock bottom and began to sob: “You can see the state of my nerves. I’ve got so many problems at the moment. If I’m like this with my crutch, how do you expect me to cope without it?”
She hadn’t noticed that I myself had been startled by the sudden slamming of the door, as had the rest of the group. Fortunately for us, her tears distracted us from our own reactions and the embarrassment we would have felt. I asked her if she’d ever noticed how nervous birds appear to be when feeding, and how the slightest sound will send them back to the safety of the trees. I pointed out that to them the slightest sound meant a cat, and that it is not only natural for birds to react like that, it is absolutely essential to their survival.
This is yet another classic example of the brainwashing we are subjected to from birth. We are brought up to believe that a perfectly natural fearful reaction is some form of deficiency or weakness in our physical or mental makeup, when in reality our nerves are just another facet of our incredible machines, designed to help us survive. In fact the incident proved to be very fortunate. The lady had been so low that she hadn’t been taking much in up to that point. But she could suddenly see that her jump, far from being abnormal, was a sign that her body was functioning normally. The effect was quite remarkable. The tears immediately turned into a big smile. She was able to discuss all the other terrible problems that were weighing her down. They turned out to be the typical annoyances with which everyone is afflicted in Western society, and she admitted that none of them was particularly tragic. I pointed out that I had exactly the same problems but that they no longer worried me. The incident did help her, and the rest of the group, to realize that the only reason that these concerns appeared to be greater to them was because they were regularly administering a powerful poison to their own bodies, a poison that was debilitating their health and energy and destroying their courage and confidence. It’s so obvious really, if you feel physically and mentally low, molehills become mountains.
We tend to confuse stress and responsibility. And we tend to think of nerves as a bad thing. It is essential that we understand each of these terms clearly. Our nervous system is an asset, a vital part of our protection. Responsibility can be good or bad. If you like responsibility, then you will thrive on it.
