Victoria sat straight up in bed and banged her fists down on the sheets over and over again. “I HATE THEM BOTH!” she yelled. Then she began to sob from deep down in her stomach, and went on crying until she was nearly sick.

Lehzen didn’t like Sir John Conroy either. But if she said so to the Duchess, then the Duchess would tell Sir John and he would order Lehzen to be sent away, and then, where would Victoria be without her? Lehzen knew she must keep quiet.

“Take no notice of him, Vicky!” she said lightly. “Pretend he’s a spider in the corner of the ceiling! Or a beetle running along the floor. Or pretend he’s not there at all – that you’re just imagining him. Then you can imagine him away again whenever you like! One day, you know, he won’t be there. As soon as you’re Queen, you can put him in the Tower and have his head chopped off!” And she brought Victoria a hanky and a glass of milk.

Next morning, Sir John asked Victoria to lend him her pocket-money for a whole week, and when she wouldn’t, he said she was stingy.

“Just like your grandmother Queen Charlotte,” he said, “you know, the wife of your dotty old grandfather King George the Third. One sandwich short of a picnic, he was! But I expect they’ve told you about him.”

Victoria stood there calmly, imagining he wasn’t there. Then a little smile began at the corner of her mouth. She was thinking about all the things she could do to Sir John Conroy once she was Queen. Like putting him in the Tower and having his head chopped off. Or pulling out all the hairs on his head one by one, and then all the hairs inside his nose. Oh, yes. There were possibilities, once you put your mind to it.

Or, thought Victoria, I might just put creepy-crawlies down the back of his neck, and leave it at that.
