âSo thatâs the story,â Andrews finished. âOur Mr McGrath is a piece of work.â
West sat in his usual position, chair balanced on its back legs, rocking pensively back and forth. âBlackmail is a nasty business, Peter.â
âYes, I think weâll have to look very closely at McGrath. He has secrets. Maybe Roberts found them out.â
âAnd he killed him, his own brother-in-law?â West didnât sound convinced. âI donât know, Pete. It sounds like this blackmail business was reactive. He panicked when he was caught in a compromising situation, used what he knew to redress the balance.â
âYou make it sound perfectly acceptable.â
âJust the reaction of a stupid man. You saw McGrath in the graveyard. If he hadnât come to us, weâd never have thought to look closer at him. It was an idiotic thing to do. But Gerard Robertsâ murder is a different story. Cleverly planned and vicious.â He dropped his chair onto its four legs with a bang. âBut letâs not rule him out. Have a look at his finances. If he could blackmail the school head, maybe heâs done it before, and youâll find regular deposits from some nefarious character. Roberts found out, threatened to expose him and McGrath had him killed. Weâll arrest him, and that will be that.â
âIt happens that way in films,â Andrews said with a shrug.
âAnd in the best novels,â West added.
âMcGrath is a nasty piece of work,â Andrews said, rubbing a hand over his head.
West cocked an eyebrow. He heard the tone of voice, Andrews wanted something done. âYou liked this Tom Reilly?â
âHeâs a decent man who loves his job, and his partner,â he said. âThe likes of Greg McGrath shouldnât be allowed to wreck any of that.â
Life wasnât usually that simple. Andrews tended to be a bit black and white, but there were a lot of grey shades in between. Blackmail, however, was a foul game â time to call a halt to it. âI think we should seize his home computer,â West said, seeing an immediate look of satisfaction cross Andrewsâ face. âWe need to find out precisely what kind of porn heâs into. Weâll have no problem getting a warrant, all we have to do is put the words pornography and school in the same sentence.â
âTomorrow?â Andrews asked.
âWe need to be considerate of the familyâs grief. Mrs Robertâs sister looked distraught. It might be best to contact McGrath directly, once you have the warrant.â West reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a card. âHe was kind enough to give us his number, after all, letâs use it.â
