Chapter Twenty-five

Hayes would have been surprised to see where Ray went next. His walk took him across town and to the spiritualist church he had passed many times but never entered. It was in an odd location, next to a supermarket and opposite a multi-storey car park.

Ray went inside, not sure why he was there or what he was going to say to anyone. An elderly woman with thick, pale grey hair stood in the lobby arranging flowers. She looked up when he came in.

‘Hello, can I help you? There isn’t a circle this afternoon, I’m afraid.’

‘A circle?’

‘The development circle,’ she smiled. ‘But I see you didn’t come for that. How can I be of help then?’

Ray frowned. ‘I’m not sure if you can. Look, a friend of mine has become involved with a medium. Or that’s what she calls herself. This friend is taking her very seriously and I’m worried about her pinning too much hope on, you know, on this medium being right.’

‘I take it you’re not impressed by the lady’s credentials,’ she said. ‘Have you seen her work? Are you familiar with the way we normally do work?’

‘We? Oh, you mean you’re a . . . No offence,’ he added. ‘I’m pretty ignorant about spiritualism.’

‘Come on through to the office,’ the woman said. ‘I’ll see if I can enlighten you.’

He smiled. ‘That would be nice. I could use some enlightenment right now.’

She laughed then. ‘We can but try.’

Ray told her about Damien without giving names. He described to the woman, who told him her name was Gladys, the way that Frida Appleton had used automatic writing to take down the message. She nodded, understanding.

‘Automatic writing. I know of people who use it. I know nothing about your lady, by the way, but that doesn’t mean a great deal. Personally, I can’t do it, my thoughts start chattering away and before I know where I am I’m composing a shopping list.’ She laughed, as much at Ray’s surprised expression as at her own joke. ‘My dear, we have to see the humour in these things. Spirit doesn’t want us to be gloomy boots.’

‘Do you think she could be genuine?’

‘Who’s to say? I’ve never heard of automatic writing being used to contact someone in a coma before, but anything is possible I suppose. If she came here and used the development circle then we’d know how many . . . well, hits she had, if you like. We’d be able to assess how much of what she did was cold reading and how much was from spirit and, believe me, sometimes that’s hard even for the individual to know.’

‘Cold reading?’

‘We all pick up a whole load of clues about people and the kind of lives they lead almost without knowing it. Almost invisible things, unconscious clues, which we add to the way we consciously make decisions about people we meet for the first time. We revise those conscious decisions as we go along, but the unconscious ones often stay with us and become assimilated into our .
