“Get back, you fiends!” Latislav cried out from the wrecked square in the center of the ruins that sat over the Dungeons of Doom. “Back!”

Guffy barely took the time to put Moyra and Driskoll down before turning to face the demons. Kellach dropped to the ground just as the sergeant leaped into the fray.

During the terrifying race through the darkness, only one thought kept racing through Driskoll’s head. Thank the gods Guffy was on their side. The werewolf version of the kind sergeant moved with a hunter’s cold, sleek grace. Each of his long, loping strides struck true, never faltering, never swaying from the right path. When they reached the turnoff to the overgrown road that led to the ruins, Driskoll couldn’t even see it, but the werewolf had raced along it like just another turn in a track.

They hadn’t seen any demons along the way. It seemed as if all of them had gone to attack Curston, leaving no one to protect the gateway into the Abyss. Or so Driskoll had hoped. Once they’d reached the ruins, though, Driskoll knew that they hadn’t been so lucky. The sounds of battle echoed off the crumbling walls. Driskoll had expected to come upon Jourdain, Zendric, and Latislav battling some unnamable horror in the central square there. His heart sank when he spotted the cleric, alone.

Latislav stood in the center of a circle drawn around the entrance to the stairwell into the Dungeons of Doom. A handful of demons of different types surrounded Latislav: two incubi and a trio of quasits. Alone, none of them might have stood a chance against the cleric, but together they had him crumbling to his knees in fear.

Guffy slammed into the incubi and brought them to the ground. The two had been hovering close together, and the werewolf could reach them both within his massive reach. They disappeared in a heap beneath him as Guffy brought them crashing to the ground, fur flying and wings flapping.

Latislav screamed at the sight of the werewolf. The quasits cackled at the cleric and their compatriots entangled in battle with the newcomer. Then they saw the Knights.

“The circle!” Kellach said, already dashing forward, “Run for it!”

Sometimes Driskoll questioned his brother’s judgment. Things like running straight toward a group of demons, any one of which could probably have killed them all, often triggered that kind of hesitation. At that moment, though, Driskoll didn’t second-guess Kellach for an instant. He just put his head down and ran right after him.

Moyra, who’d always been faster than Driskoll, passed him only a few steps along. She had even caught up with Kellach by the time he dived across the edge of the circle, and the two landed in a heap at Latislav’s feet.

As soon as the quasits spotted the Knights, they had split up: one demon per Knight. The two following Kellach and Moyra stopped short of the edge of the circle when the kids crossed it, as if the circle formed some sort of invisible wall the creatures dared not touch.
