We strolled along the one and only street. There were shops with the latest hi-fis and electrical equipment, there were shops with dishwashers and deep freezers, there were shops featuring expensive gowns and ladies underwear. There were two car dealers, one with in its window a Lincoln Limousine, the other showing an Alfa Romeo Sports. What was going on here?

His guide had one word. “Poppies.”

They went to one of the village bars and took a table. A spit-and-sawdust cantina this was not. They ordered a bottle of Dom Pérignon and two fat Cuban cigars. His guide started to explain.
