CHAPTER 13
âSome friendship is closely akin to treachery.â
âRobert N. Lee
Maxwell
The quote was one Iâd used more than once. Now it remained in the back of my mind, playing over again several times.
I unbuttoned my jacket before climbing inside the rental, making certain the second magazine was safely positioned in my pocket. She was watching everything I did as I closed the door, a visible shiver going through her.
âEverything okay?â she asked.
Today wasnât the day to be completely honest with her. She was under enough stress as it was. âFine. Just putting things in order.â
âYou forget that Iâm not a child any longer. You donât need to keep things from me.â
âThatâs not what Iâm trying to do.â She would need to learn every detail soon enough, but not until I figured out who she could trust.
âNice car. A Maserati. A treat for yourself?â she asked. âDrive a sports car while youâre on duty.â
As I started the engine, I allowed a grin for the first time in a while. âIt matches the one I own in LA.â
âOh, a rich guy, huh?â Her question was laced with a hint of mischief.
âSomething like that. The security business has been very good to me.â
âIâd like to hear more about it.â
I shot her a look as I roared out of the driveway, immediately checking the rearview mirror. âI wonât bore you to death with details.â
âTranslation. You canât talk about your work or your clients, but Iâm interested, nonetheless. In fact, Iâd like to learn more about you in general.â
âThatâs allowed but thereâs not much to tell. Iâm not an exciting guy. I work long hours, often on assignment three to five weeks at a time. Iâm rarely at my house.â
âWhat do you do for fun?â
âWork. What do you do for fun?â
She was far too quiet for a few seconds, which I wasnât used to. âYou know whatâs strange? I have one true girlfriend and Iâve known her since the fourth grade. Other than that, I dance.â
âWhat about people at the ballet company?â
âYou really donât know anything about the life. Do you?â
âNo, I donât. Why donât you tell me about it?â
âItâs dog eat dog. I meant what I said earlier about the girls. Theyâre all neurotic bitches. However, most of the male dancers are worse, or theyâre trying to peel away every girlâs leotard. My understudy hated me for getting the role, the majority of soloists certain I was selected because of my father and his brutal dictatorship. Even most of the dancers in the corps wonât talk to me.â
âSo why is it so important for you to be there if thatâs the way you feel?â I asked, genuinely curious.
âBecause Iâm not there to make friends. Itâs the most powerful ballet company in the world. Itâs been my dream since I could remember. I only hope Iâm good enough.â
âYouâre good enough. Youâre amazing.â
She tipped her head. âA compliment.â
I glanced over and my hunger for her burned as if acid had been tossed in my direction. âEvery once in a while, they happen.
