to swim. I just stand, fingers curled on links,
with skinny kids in overlong T-shirts
leaning on posts, chatting up pool denizens.
And the vendors wheel drink carts outside,
purse their lips and chirp to the kids, summoning
pocket change. I imagine drawing breath
between dips as other kids float on backs,
water, lukewarm. No tide to pull them down.
