Willis Cain opened his front door to find Remy standing on the other side. He let his gaze rake over her as she stood beneath the cover of his front porch with a dark hazy sky behind her. “Well, I don’t think I’ve seen that look in your eyes in quite a long while, Remy.”

“I’m ready to hit back,” she replied.

“So I see. Come in.” He stepped aside while Remy entered.

She held the letter in her hand. “I decided to read this one. Care to know what he had to say?” Remy followed him into the kitchen where he grabbed an open bottle of wine from the fridge.

“Hope you like white.” He didn’t wait for a response and poured a full glass for each of them.

She took the glass and sat down at the kitchen island. “Thank you for changing your plans. I’m sorry this was such short notice.”

“Don’t be.” Cain pressed his hands against the island top. “I thought I’d made myself clear to the prison administrator, but it’s clear that didn’t work. Did he threaten you?”

“Nothing explicit. But he sure knows all about me and my current life.” Remy sipped on the wine. “I won’t let him get away with this.”

“And he shouldn’t. He won’t,” Cain began. “This is his nature, Remy. You know that far better than I. He’s controlling, manipulative…”

“For starters,” she replied. “What did the warden say? Will he see me tonight? I can’t wait any longer…”

“He agreed—reluctantly, and with a fair bit of convincing on my part. Frankly, he doesn’t want the PR nightmare, so yes, he’ll see you tonight,” Cain replied.

Remy set down her glass and locked eyes with him. “Thank you, Willis. I know you’re sticking your neck out for me.”

“I am doing that, you can bet on it, but this appears to be inevitable.” Cain stood upright again and drank the last of his wine. “I’ll drive.” He pulled his keys from the hook near the front door. “Be prepared for the fallout, Remy. I have a feeling there’ll be plenty of it to go around.”

She followed him to his driveway and slipped onto the passenger seat of his gray Mercedes sedan.

Cain backed out of the driveway and headed northwest in the direction of the warden’s home. “How’s your sister?”

Remy turned to him. “Claire? She’s doing well. She doesn’t know I’m here.”

“That doesn’t come as much of a surprise. I remember how protective she was of you,” he replied.

“That hasn’t changed. Have you heard about those small-time bank robberies down this way?”

“Sure have.” He glanced at her. “Are you on that case?”

“I am. I’m working with the Marshals to track them down.”

“Any leads?” he continued.

“A few.”

“Well, if I know you, and I think I do, those men don’t stand a chance. LBI is lucky to have you, Remy. I checked in on you every now and again when you were a trooper. Lots of folks had lots of good things to say about you. I admire how you chose to take back your life.
