CHAPTER

NINETEEN

Jamie didn’t really think about the route, but she drove them right there. Alina was happy to throw her headphones in and zone out, which suited Jamie as she wasn’t feeling especially talkative.

When they pulled onto the driveway, Elliot’s car was gone, but Mila’s sleek black Mercedes coupe was parked in front of the garage. Jamie had sort of hoped she’d be out. Guess there was no backing down now.

She kicked the car door open, feeling the sting of the cool afternoon air. Dusk was already closing in, and the temperature seemed to be dropping rapidly. It was a typical Welsh autumn by the looks of it - flat and grey, and desperate to be winter already.

Alina stowed her headphones and got out of the car, following Jamie up towards the front door. Jamie glanced back at the old Toyota behind her, the beaten-up exterior a stark contrast from the gleaming Mercedes in front of it.

‘Why are we here again?’ she asked, catching up to Jamie.

‘We’re asking about Elliot,’ Jamie reiterated. She was certain that he had something to do with this, though she wasn’t sure if it was a good thing or a bad thing. She was leaning towards the latter, as much as she hated that. Things had been good, he’d seemingly turned a corner, except for being married to some Russian—

She stopped five feet short of the door as it opened, revealing Mila. She was just as tall and beautiful as Jamie remembered her to be. Her long, silk-like hair was tied up and back, and though she had bags under her eyes and looked a little thinner than Jamie remembered, she still sideswiped her with her presence.

Mila’s face dropped, as though she’d been expecting someone else.

‘I thought you were …’ she said, confirming it.

Thought we were Elliot, Jamie guessed.

‘I’m sorry,’ she said, stepping back into the house and attempting to close the door. ‘He’s not here, so—’

‘Wait,’ Jamie said, ‘that’s why we’re here.’

Mila’s brow creased. ‘I don’t understand.’ She was in a pair of jeans and a cardigan with long hems, and she wrapped them around herself to protect her from the cold, and from these unwanted visitors.

Jamie glanced around, not really wanting to do this on the driveway. ‘Can we come in? We just want to talk.’

‘About what?’ Mila asked, standing firm in the doorway.

‘About Elliot,’ Jamie said, stepping closer. ‘About where the hell he is.’

Mila lifted her chin, almost haughtily. ‘I thought you might have a better idea than me.’

Jamie shrugged off the slight scorn she detected in her voice. ‘I don’t, but I want to know because he has something to do with this case.’

‘What case?’

‘You don’t know?’

She narrowed her eyes. ‘No, he doesn’t talk to me about his work. He doesn’t talk to me about much at all.’ The scorn was definitely real now. ‘He just stranded me here in this …’ she looked at the house around her, ‘… suburban nightmare, and then just fucking disappeared.’ She shook her head, muttering something in Russian, and then looked back at Jamie.
