◇May 2nd, Kimihiko Kimizuka

The moment the day changed, I was sleeping lazily in my hotel bed when my phone notified me of an incoming call.

The caller was—Danny Bryant.

With a small gasp, I walked to the room window and tapped the call button.

“Yo, so you’ve arrived?”

The voice on the other end of the phone sounded more annoyed than angry. While I was left wondering how to answer, I eventually heard a loud sigh.

“No one’s near you right now, right? Are you alone?”

Danny asks, and I look around again.

“Yeah. I’ve been alone since I was born, and I’m still alone right now.”

“Haha, good answer.”

Sixty points, Danny laughs. That’s rather strict though.

“—So? Why did you even come here?”

But then, Danny’s tone of voice dropped a notch. It seemed he wasn’t exactly devoid of anger here.

“I’m sure I did tell you to stay at home, didn’t I?”

I remembered what Danny had told me three nights ago. From what he said, he was going to be away for a while to take care of some troublesome business.

I did as I was told and spent the next day as usual…but then I had a little change of heart and went over to where I thought Danny would be.

“Goodness, this kid just wouldn’t listen to me.”

I could imagine Danny’s frustration on the other end of the phone after I failed to follow his instructions.

“It was just a coincidence that I came here. I just had a craving for some Toyama Black.”

“I see, there’s a bunch of instant noodles in the cupboard. You can go home now and boil some water. Recommended noodle hardness is two and a half minutes.”

I see. It seems he really didn’t want to talk openly until I did.

“You’re the one who told me to become a con man who can fool the police and detectives.”

I had a feeling I heard a little sigh when I said that.

“I’m not a cop.”

“Just a metaphor. I don’t care who you are—But.”

But, I couldn’t find the right words to follow up with.

“Where are you now?”

Instead, I said those words. I knew he’s most probably nearby, but where exactly was Danny? And also,

“What’s this troublesome business of yours? Does it have anything to do with the fact that someone’s been chasing you lately?”

I continued to fire rapid questions at Danny, who remained silent.

Then, after a moment of silence.

“Why are you asking me this now?”

Danny asked me calmly.

“We’ve never talked about anything serious like this. We never involved ourselves in each other’s business. That’s the rule.”

Why are you breaking the rules, Danny Bryant asked the reason for my change of heart. The reason for that though was exactly what he had just told me.

“You’re always wandering around, I never know what you’re doing, you never bothered to tell me when you’re going for work. It’s only that day when you told me the next job might be troublesome…and that you wouldn’t be back in a while. Why’s that?”

Maybe it’s just a gut feeling that I couldn’t rely on.

But I had a feeling that Danny was ready for something.
