Not so far away from the front gate of the base, hidden under a beige camouflage sacking, packed into the hot sand, was Schacht and Ritter. Both had been there for the better part of a day, sweating profusely and drinking constantly to replace the lost fluids. The camouflage sacking somewhat protected them from the sun, but nevertheless they were feeling the effects of the heat.

“About bloody time” said Ritter, when he saw Bradley through his sights, “I’m about to pass out here.”

“All good things come to those who wait” murmured Schacht.

“Are you sure that’s one of them?”

“Oh yes” said Schacht, “very sure.”

“So what now?” said Ritter, “obviously shooting him in front of the base in full view of his colleagues is not an option.”

Schacht peered upwards. “It’s about to get dark. I would say let’s see what he does and if we get a chance, we take him under cover of darkness.”

“He would have to move away from the base for us to do that” objected Ritter, “what are the chances of that happening?”

Then before their eyes, Bradley began to walk away from the base.

“I don’t fucking believe this” said Ritter, “this is Iraq and he goes for a walk?”

“Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth” said Schacht, putting his equipment away, “take a pistol and a knife and prepare to leave the rest here.”
