They were back in the car. Ottey turned to Cross before turning the ignition.

‘Isn’t it weird with retired detectives?’ she said.

Cross didn’t comment. He so hated these kind of questions because they weren’t actually questions at all. Not even rhetorical in the strict sense of the word. They were just statements to elicit a response along the lines of “what do you mean?” Redundant. Annoying even.

‘When they’re at work they come over all authoritative. They have presence, a confidence in everything they do or say. They even sit differently. Then it’s all gone. It’s a bit sad really. Pathetic, she said. Cross didn’t have any particular sympathy with or for MacDonald. ‘His admission was interesting though,’ she continued, ‘Understandable in the circumstances. Not in the game with everything going on at home, and too proud to say anything to anyone at work.’

‘It was interesting,’ Cross agreed.

‘I thought it was genuine, sincere. It’s obviously something that’s stayed with him.’

It was indeed. But what Cross was thinking was that it was completely out of character. That was what had interested him. It’s being out of character. These were the things that he picked up on, which might not seem relevant to others. If something is out of character there has to be a reason for it. MacDonald had made a decision to change tack, to appeal to their compassionate side. Why was that? To divert them away from their questions? He was taking them into his confidence with an admission no self-respecting senior police officer would ever freely admit to – not doing his job properly when in charge of a major murder case. But he had miscalculated because he’d forgotten Cross didn’t have a compassionate side.

But why had MacDonald done it? And why had he asked them at the front door, as he showed them out, if Leonard had been strangled?
