TYLER HUNG UP the phone and just sat there. This wouldn’t be something that he would want to tell to anyone. He couldn’t tell Rosie about this. No way. Tyler’s mind started going now. Again, he felt like he was maybe starting to lose it. He thought about Jackie over an embankment on the side of the road, bloodied and hurt. She’d have to have some stitches and surgery on her face. That was never going to be the same for her again.

And then, a very quiet and very tiny voice in Tyler’s head said, Serves that bitch right. She deserves it for what she did to my arm.

The thought was there and gone before Tyler could even identify it or stop it. But it frightened Tyler very much. I wasn’t thinking that! That wasn’t me! Tyler walked over to the bed and lay facedown. He wanted to shut out the world for a while. He needed some peace in his mind.

Why is this happening? What in the world is going on? I need to get back to just having a normal life. Tyler tried to shut out everything for a bit. He had to try to think about nothing. Nothing at all.

Tyler had enough exercise at this in his life, that it started to work. But conscience has a funny way of crippling peace of mind.

Nothing.

Shut up! … Nothing.

Jackie’s face ripped open.

Tyler pulled the pillow over his head, as if this would give him some sort of relief from the images in his own head. A sense of desperation started creeping into his mind. It started at the base of his head and seemed to be pulling his head backwards. His back was also starting to feel really tight.

He threw the pillow in the corner really hard and jumped up out of the bed. This wasn’t working for him at all. It was getting on into the evening now. Tyler decided that he’d head to the bathroom, and then see if Rosie or Aunt Jenny were out and available. Maybe they could provide enough of a distraction to soothe something in his mind. Maybe.
