The man seated before me is absolutely nothing like what I anticipated when I walked into my office this morning.

Typically, the people dumb enough to think they can run and hide from me are nothing more than quivering masses by the time I show up. When they know they’ve been caught. When they know it’s over.

But not this guy.

He sits ramrod straight and looks me right in the eye as I sit across from him.

We found him hiding up in Canada, of all places. I guess it was the easiest place to go, and the border really isn’t that far from Philly. He wasn’t hiding very well. Using his real name and staying in an easily accessible hotel. It was almost as if he weren’t really hiding at all.

And he came easily. No fight.

That earns some respect in my book.

“Brandon, is it?”

He nods. With his massive frame, close-cropped sandy hair and stern, cold blue eyes, the man might be intimidating to someone else. It doesn’t fool me, though. He may look tough as nails, but he still ran rather than coming to face me.

I clasp my hands together on the desk and examine him. He can’t be more than forty. Steady eyes. Steady hands on the armrests. Not shaking like most would.

Interesting.

“Well, Brandon, I’m going to explain the situation, although I think you already have some idea what’s going on, given the way you fled.”

He gives me a small nod, but again, shows no signs of the fear I usually instill in people.

I relax back in my chair and light a cigarette. He watches me as I take my first drag and blow out a ring of smoke. “I’m looking for two people. I think you know where I can find them. Lorenc and Rea. She also goes by Jade. Where did you take them?”

The man shifts slightly in his seat. “Mr. Gashi, I want to make something clear before we start. I wasn’t running from you, per se, I just really have no desire to be involved in any of this. I’m a pilot, not a mobster. No offense.”

I chuckle and raise my hands. “None taken.”

“I fly for a lot of people. One of them happened to be Tarek. He paid me well, and I didn’t ask any questions, just filed the flight plans and took him wherever he wanted to go. I never anticipated there would be an issue like this.”

While what he said makes sense, he knew what Tarek did when he took the job. Turning a blind eye to what you are doing and for whom doesn’t excuse it. Anyone connected to this carries some level of guilt.

I nod for him to continue.

“The day it happened, I got a call from someone who told me to have the plane ready. I was at the tarmac and waiting for Tarek, only he didn’t show. Lorenc did. And he had a woman and dog with him.”

“Rea?”

He shakes his head and shrugs. “I can’t be one hundred percent sure.
