Chapter 13

The peace of the police station was broken by the sound of a shrieking voice. It was enough to wake the dead and turned a series of eyes in the direction it had come from.

“I said, I want to speak to whoever is in charge!”

A stern lady stood at the front desk, her eyes fiery and offering the look of someone with an axe to grind. She was mid-thirties, with her hair tied back into a blonde ponytail, a hint of colouring masking the true shade. She appeared angry and ready to launch a tirade at whoever might cross her. It was PC Dawson that was the first to react.

The young officer at the desk jumped to his feet. His newspaper was pushed aside as the demands of the woman took his attention. He blustered his words, leaving him wrestling with the right thing to say. His only achievement was to sound like a gibbering fool.

“Come on, I haven’t got all day,” she insisted.

The woman stood with both hands on the desk, her figure looming large. She was not particularly tall and yet the imposing manner with which she presented herself implied someone of impressive stature. She was too much for PC Dawson, his desperation to find somebody of authority obvious. He was panicked and the woman was going to do nothing to let him calm down.

“Let me get someone for you,” he said in hope rather than with any expectation it would appease her.

“Just be quick about it,” she barked.

Any fear of calling up to the boss was lost in an instant. If it would take away her presence, it was a call that was worth making.

DCI Nick Lang picked up on the second ring.

“Sorry to interrupt you, sir. I’ve got a woman demanding to see you.”

Lang leaned back in his chair, surprised at the unexpected intrusion. He held the phone to his ear while his eyes remained on the incident report displayed on his screen.

“Who is it?”

“I don’t know,” said PC Dawson.

“Did you think to ask her?”

“Err, no. Just give me a second. Excuse me, madam, what did you say your name was?”

“I didn’t and I’m not a madam.”

That was a matter for debate thought Lang. He could hear every word of the conversation without the need for PC Dawson to relay it. Whoever had arrived at the station was clearly going to be difficult. It would need the delicate touch of someone who revelled in such confrontations. Lang contemplated finding out where Jack was. Common sense got the better of him and he lifted his frame off his chair to go down to meet her.

“Tell her I’m on my way. Ask her to take a seat.”

The relief in the young officer’s tone was obvious. He had crumbled in the face of pressure. Lang noted it for future reference. For now, the more pressing matter was a woman causing havoc at the front desk.

“He’s on his way,” insisted PC Dawson.

“About time. How long will he be?”

“A couple of minutes.
