CHAPTER 24

Newport Central HQ – 3:13pm

‘Thank you for coming down to speak with us, Mr Thackery.’ Fagan said politely.

‘What exactly am I doing here?’ Thackery asked.

‘We just want to ask you some questions regarding an incident a few hours ago.’

‘What incident?’ Thackery said nervously. ‘I have been nowhere else but at the dig site. So whatever you are about to accuse me of, you better be prepared to be fucked by a very expensive lawyer.’

Fagan studied Thackery’s tone. ‘First of all Mr Thackery, we are not here to accuse you of anything. But, an incident has occurred within the past few hours in Abergavenny. What I would like to ask you is, did you know a man by the name of Ross Smith?’

‘No, who the hell is that?’ Thackery answered quickly.

‘Mr Smith was found murdered at his flat on Old Tavern way.’

‘Why has any of this got to do with me?’ Thackery shrugged. ‘I don’t know who this bloke is you just mentioned. As I just said. I have been at that bloody dig site for the last several hours. I’d appreciate it if you would let me get back there before they find the second marker.’

‘Why the rush?’ Watkins asked. ‘You are one of the backers for the dig. I’m sure you are kept up to date on everything.’

Thackery glared at him. ‘I just want to get back to the site before that prick from the Vatican finds the second marker. I’m already pissed off that Turner has already hidden stuff from me.’

‘Are you referring to the sword and chest he found?’

‘Yes, I am.’

‘Sounds to me Mr Thackery, that you’re the kind of man that doesn’t like to be conned. But is quite happy stabbing others in the back.’

Thackery rolled his eyes. ‘Oh, here we go. I bet that bitch Sarah York has been slagging me off about what happened ten years ago, hasn’t she? Turner knew what I was like when he made the deal with me. I suppose she hasn’t mentioned that Turner kept some valuables he found at that dig. The Templars were just as bad as everyone else. They plundered the Holy Land for all kinds of things. You two need to brush up on your history sometime. Turner lied to me from day one about this dig. It’s clear that all he wanted was my money. Shithead thought he could sneak things away under my nose.’

‘That shithead you just referred to was brutally murdered.’ Fagan pointed out. ‘Did he deserve that as well?’

‘No, he did not. Look, I know where you are going with this.’

‘And where exactly are we going, Mr Thackery?’ Watkins asked.

‘You think I had a motive to murder Turner. I may be an arsehole sometimes, but I am no murderer.’

At last, something we can all agree on. Fagan thought. ‘What exactly are your plans regarding the dig, Mr Thackery? I thought you were only interested in the journal that Turner kept.’

‘Of course I am.’

‘Why is that exactly?’
