As they returned to the Baker, basket and blanket in hand, Monty felt a slight niggle of worry rush over him as he noticed that the creature’s tail no longer overhung the side of the vehicle. He called out, making a noise somewhat like a bark, hoping the creature would answer in turn.

“What are you about?” asked a bemused Bishop.

Monty shrugged. Not sure why he had felt the need to try to communicate with their creature in its own language.

“I am worried our new friend has fled the scene,” he said.

“Really?” Bishop examined the vehicle more closely. “Maybe so. Perhaps he’s just somehow climbed up onto the riding bench.”

As they got closer to the car, both young men went slack-jawed. Instead of the massive seal they had wrestled into the car, there, on the seat, sat a very tall and broad-shouldered man wrapped in the very same driving blanket Bishop had retrieved.

Bishop was slack-jawed, but Monty backed away from the car, frowning.

He couldn't believe his eyes. There, sat on the bench, was the man from his sketchbook. At least, that is, the man he saw in his mind as he struggled to put the image on paper. The very same features which had sometimes crowded his dreams were just there. Real and in the flesh.

And indeed he was exactly how Monty had imagined. Quite the most beautiful man he had ever seen. Deeply bronzed skin, dark curly hair, and shimmering brown eyes with flecks of gold. Eyes he recognized. They were the same eyes that had studied him in the lake, but now they looked even more familiar. As if he had gazed on them many a time over in his dreams.

On the one hand, Monty wanted to touch him, to feel him, to trace the lines he had so often dashed off in pencil that were now made manifest. But, on the other hand, fear won out. How in the world could this be? What sort of sorcery was it that some man he had only imagined was before him? Obviously strange things happened—like giant seals throwing themselves from the water and crawling to automobiles. But how could this be?

“Selkie!” Monty blurted out.

The man in the car bowed his head bashfully and smiled.

Bishop seemed to have been shaken loose from his shock.

“What are you saying?” he asked.

“A s-s-selkie,” repeated Monty. “He must be a selkie.”

The man motioned for them to come closer, though he did not rise from the seat. Bishop, his mouth still agape, walked towards the car.

“Bishop,” Monty cautioned. “Be careful.”
