Chapter 18 – High Society

It was early, just after seven, and we’d only been asleep a few hours; I heard Heath moving around, getting dressed. He had showered and looked gorgeous and comfortable with his unfamiliar look – dress pants, a T-shirt and a suit jacket. He came back and sat on the edge of the bed. I didn’t have Heath’s sensory strengths yet, but I could smell his sensual cologne on the pillow.

‘Why are you up so early? It’s Saturday,’ I said, stretching out across both sides of the bed.

‘I’ve got to go to work, Conrad’s meeting me there at eight. It’s a new business,’ he said. ‘By the way, I rang Nelly and told her you were safe.’ He touched my face with his hand.

‘Are you alright?’ he asked.

‘I think so. I kept waking every time I thought about what might have happened if you hadn’t been there.’

‘I’ll always be there. Come on, I’ll drop you home before my meeting.’ He rose and pulled the curtains open. It was a great apartment. The views of the moors and village were fantastic and private given Heath, or Aden’s loft was on the top floor.

I raised myself on one elbow; clearly, that was a subtle hint to get up and get dressed.

‘You promised to answer my questions this morning – where you have been for the last year, who you met, what you know about your family, and what’s the new business you’ve got… and us,’ I said, pushing back the covers and getting out of bed. Half-dressed from last night, except for my boots and jacket, I brushed myself down like the creases would just vanish.

‘We’ll talk about us for sure,’ he said. ‘And I’ll tell you in great detail tonight.’

Tonight. Uh oh, this was going to get ugly. He turned to look at me when I didn’t respond. I grimaced.

‘I’ve got plans for tonight.’

‘Right,’ he said. ‘With whom?’

I hesitated, it’s not like it was any of his business.

‘Edgar,’ I answered. ‘I’ve got a date with Edgar.’

I felt the wall of cold hit me from where I was standing. Heath clenched his hands, his jaw locked and I swear his eyes would have flared red if that was possible. I lowered my eyes and focussed on putting my boots back on.

‘Last night you wanted me to kiss you and yet you’re still going to see him?’ he asked in a very restrained voice.

‘I… yes, it’s arranged, and you didn’t kiss me. Edgar and I set this up last week when you were only just back on the scene. Besides, I like Edgar, he’s lovely.’ I rose to full height and reached for my bag. In a flash, Heath was by my side, holding both of my arms and glaring down at me.

‘Cathy, why would you do that to us?’

I looked at him incredulously. ‘Heath, you’ve been back for a minute and you expect me to drop my plans and pick up where we left off? I don’t even know how you feel about me or us.
