In Europe (a friend tells me that Italy is infected with the practice), England, and America, the custom of April fooling continues to this day. In Scotland, the victim of an April Fool’s prank is called the April Gawk, gawk being a derivation of the old Teutonic word gauch , meaning “cuckoo.” The cuckoo, which lays her eggs in other birds’ nests, leaving the hard work of rearing her chicks to others, serves as a natural model for tricksters.

In keeping with the spirit of the day, let us accept all the above explanations as little more than fool’s errands, and enjoy this silly day for what it is — a gasp of nonsensical delight at the dawn of spring.
