Chapter Seven

Cian found himself touched by Praerna’s eagerness to please. He’d never had a date, lover, anyone, who watched his cues so attentively. Praerna not only wanted to know exactly how Cian made his drink, but the second it looked like sitting on the floor wasn’t comfortable, he began throwing out alternatives.

Damn. That’s... really nice.

While it didn’t take any stretch of Cian’s nearly nonexistent imagination to realize that he would end up being the dominant in their relationship, that didn’t mean Praerna would be a pushover, either.

And damn, guess I’m accepting this relationship. Just had to get my head around the whole gargoyle thing.

“So what did we end up with?” Cian asked as he lifted the lid from his plate. He hummed as he eyed the steak, lobster tail, and mashed potatoes. “Surf and turf. Nice.”

Cian was damn glad he wasn’t allergic to shellfish.

“Oh, wow.” Praerna stared at his plate with wide yellow eyes. “I don’t think I’ve ever had lobster.”

“No?” Cian tucked his napkin into the collar of his shirt before picking up his knife and fork. “Never in all your, what, couple of hundred years?”

That was something Cian was still wrapping his brain around. Bonding with a gargoyle meant prospectively living for centuries—centuries upon centuries, in fact. While most paranormals lived upward of five hundred years, a gargoyle had the rare nature of existing for a couple of thousand.

No wonder mates are so important to paranormals. That’d be a long life alone.

“I’m considered fairly young for a gargoyle,” Praerna revealed, tucking into his own meal. “I don’t know my exact birthdate, but I’ve lived one hundred eighty-three summers.”

“Wow.” Cian cut into his food, glancing at the cute, pale purple male seated next to him. “That’s still impressive to me.”

Praerna beamed a smile at him, then answered his other question. “And no. For a long time, this clutch was ruled by an asshole.” Waving his fork to indicate himself, Praerna told him, “Wingless gargoyles like me were treated like second-class citizens. We did the menial, manual labor tasks, like cooking, cleaning, and laundry, while the winged gargoyles led and handled security.” Praerna shrugged. “We weren’t allowed these types of expensive foods. They were reserved for the inner circle when they had meetings with others.” Scoffing, he added, “And we sure as hell wouldn’t have been allowed to spend money on online games or a gaming system.”

Cian frowned as he chewed his bite of perfectly grilled steak. “Damn,” he muttered around his mouthful of meat before swallowing. “Glad that asshole isn’t in charge anymore.” Or we never would have met. Keeping that thought to himself, Cian asked, “What happened to him?”

“After Chieftain Kinsey won in a Right for Position challenge, unseating his power, he was taken away by the elder and his guards.” As Praerna spoke, he began carefully pulling the lobster meat from the tail. “Elder Vermidian came back last year and reported that Grecian had been put down due to his crimes against our kind.”

Nodding, Cian murmured, “Does
