So heâd meant it. He wanted to invest in my dream.
I wanted to be excited, truly I did. I knew it was bad etiquette to look a gift horse in the mouth. But in this situation, it was impossible not to find myself wanting to drill him with a single question: Why?
âI just...â I looked at him, peering closely as if Iâd be able to pinpoint the catch. âItâs hard to adjust to the idea that this fantasy of mine might become a reality.â
His amber eyes glowed in the low light of the yurt. We sat in silence, our bellies filled with the fanciest meal Iâd ever eaten. I was wearing a dress I couldnât have afforded in a hundred years. He was offering me everything I wanted and far more on a silver platter, and yet I felt like there was more. Something he wanted from me that he refused to say.
You already know what he isnât saying. That he thinks heâs Hades and youâre Persephone.
Sure, heâd said he was drunk and laughed it off. But the intensity with which heâd said it, the adrenaline-splattered panic of the situation? I found it difficult to truly believe he hadnât meant it.
âYou donât have to start until youâre ready,â he said. Maybe he sensed my discomfort. âIâm just looking to help make your dream come true, Chloe.â

When a powerful figure had touched me and called me âmy queen.â It was as if those were the dreams he wished to manifest. Goosebumps broke out on my arms and I rubbed at them.
âHayden, whatâs going on here?â I kept hugging myself, the yurt we were dining in becoming claustrophobic. The low lights amplified everything about Hayden. His hair became darker than a shadow. His amber eyes were molten gold. His pale skin appeared almost glacial, a cold beauty that was scarcely human.
His brow wrinkled and even that was handsome. And oh, I remembered his smiles and how easily Iâd laughed at the flower names. How easy being near him was. Every moment we spent together wove a braid between us that was growing taut. It was reeling me in.
âWhat do you mean?â He sipped from his glass and so help me, he looked like a king. Or a god.
âI played along because I was curious,â I said. Tugging at the shoulders of the gown, I arched an eyebrow. âIt went from a business dinner to a cab that held formal wear in my size. The cab carts me across town to an unbelievably expensive and exclusive restaurant. The private seating, the food... And yeah, weâve discussed some business. But Iâm not naive enough to believe that youâre going to invest in a twenty-six-year-old strip club waitress who has no formal education simply out of the goodness of your heart.â I sucked in a breath. âCan
