Chloe

So he’d meant it. He wanted to invest in my dream.

I wanted to be excited, truly I did. I knew it was bad etiquette to look a gift horse in the mouth. But in this situation, it was impossible not to find myself wanting to drill him with a single question: Why?

“I just...” I looked at him, peering closely as if I’d be able to pinpoint the catch. “It’s hard to adjust to the idea that this fantasy of mine might become a reality.”

His amber eyes glowed in the low light of the yurt. We sat in silence, our bellies filled with the fanciest meal I’d ever eaten. I was wearing a dress I couldn’t have afforded in a hundred years. He was offering me everything I wanted and far more on a silver platter, and yet I felt like there was more. Something he wanted from me that he refused to say.

You already know what he isn’t saying. That he thinks he’s Hades and you’re Persephone.

Sure, he’d said he was drunk and laughed it off. But the intensity with which he’d said it, the adrenaline-splattered panic of the situation? I found it difficult to truly believe he hadn’t meant it.

His amber eyes were molten gold. His pale skin appeared almost glacial, a cold beauty that was scarcely human.

His brow wrinkled and even that was handsome. And oh, I remembered his smiles and how easily I’d laughed at the flower names. How easy being near him was. Every moment we spent together wove a braid between us that was growing taut. It was reeling me in.

“What do you mean?” He sipped from his glass and so help me, he looked like a king. Or a god.

“I played along because I was curious,” I said. Tugging at the shoulders of the gown, I arched an eyebrow. “It went from a business dinner to a cab that held formal wear in my size. The cab carts me across town to an unbelievably expensive and exclusive restaurant. The private seating, the food... And yeah, we’ve discussed some business. But I’m not naive enough to believe that you’re going to invest in a twenty-six-year-old strip club waitress who has no formal education simply out of the goodness of your heart.” I sucked in a breath. “Can
