"We need to find out if Julius Feldmann really does have an alibi for Tobias's murder," Tim told Victoria after listening to Seschat's story.

The little blackmailer had gone to her room after my humans had once again assured her that they would present only Feldmann as the guilty party to the police, in the matter of the illegal origin of the statue. Tobias could no longer be held accountable for the purchase of looted art anyway—after all, he was no longer alive to answer charges.

"If we call Ms. Funke now, we should try to ask her about Julius's alibi as well," Victoria said. "Hopefully she will be able to tell us whether or not it has already been confirmed."

"I'll see what I can get out of her," Tim said. "I'm afraid the chief inspector isn't very talkative."

He, too, exuded a scent cocktail of excitement, nervousness and fear as he immediately reached for his cell phone and called the policewoman.

But his voice did not betray him; it sounded firm and calm. In clear tones, he informed Ms. Funke that his research on the statue had led him to a promising lead. He expressed the suspicion that Bastet had possibly come from an illegal excavation and into the possession of Julius Feldmann via the black market. Victoria, Pearl and I were able to follow the conversation because Tim had put his cell phone on speaker.

"And that's probably why Julius stole the statue after we found it in the garden," he concluded his report. "So that it wouldn't fall into your hands, and so your experts wouldn’t find out that the piece was looted art."

Melissa thanked him and tried to end the conversation right afterwards.

"Just a moment, please!" Tim said quickly. "Have you been able to track down Mr. Feldmann in the meantime?" he asked.

The chief inspector hesitated. I could hear her breathing through the phone, but she said nothing. She was probably debating with herself how much she was allowed to reveal about her investigation.

Tim seemed to have suspected the same thing. "Look, Ms. Funke—we're really trying to help, you can see that, can't you? We tracked down the statue for you and put you on Mr. Feldmann's trail after it was stolen again. Well, strictly speaking our dog found it, but that's still a point in our favor, I think. And I've just given you a possible motive for why this man might have murdered Mr. Unruh…"

"We have indeed been able to track down Mr. Feldmann," Melissa said, cutting him off. She sounded frustrated. "We will now, of course, question him about the new leads you have just given us. We're doing a thorough job, I can assure you."

"I certainly don't doubt that," Tim said in a conciliatory tone.

She gave a low growl. "It's just that we can't prove Mr. Feldmann stole the statue—or indeed any involvement he may have had in Tobias Unruh's death. We couldn't find any footprints of his in the garden where your dog was guarding the statue and it was stolen.
