CHAPTER 9

“Ow,” Erik moaned, rolling over to his side and rubbing a sore spot on his back. “What happened to the door? That would have been nicer.”

“What did you learn?” Allun Rha asked as he bounded over to pick Erik up. “Was it really him? Did he show you anything marvelous?”

Erik looked at his giddy grandfather and shrugged. “Just… the creation of the world.”

Allun Rha’s smile fell into the biggest frown Erik had ever seen. It looked as though it would rip the old man’s lower jaw off if it pulled any harder. “Well, everyone knows about that,” he said.

“The message is only for you,” Zefra said quickly as she stooped over to pick up the book. “No one else needs to know what you saw, or what you have learned.”

“Oh, please, he isn’t going to keep any secrets from his own grandfather,” Allun Rha said. He then turned back to Erik and grabbed him by the shoulders. “You’re not, right? You’ll keep ol’ Pops informed won’t you?”

Erik laughed. “I guess this makes me the important one now,” he said.

Allun Rha shook his head and blew a raspberry through his lips. “Well, you’re getting to be quite a cheeky little devil.”

“It’s for the best if you don’t tell him the details,” Zefra said.

Erik nodded. “But I will say one thing.”

Allun Rha’s eyes shot open wide and he squeezed Erik’s shoulders. “Yes, yes, what is it?”

“There might be another way to stop the Four Horsemen.”

Zefra’s mouth fell open and Allun Rha began dancing about, kicking his skinny little legs up and tossing quite a bit of sand around.

“I knew it!” Allun Rha shouted. “I’m going to tell the others!”

Zefra sighed and shook her head. “Better not to get his hopes up like that unless you are sure.”

Erik shrugged. “I’m pretty sure.” He looked around and for the first time realized that it was already dark outside. “How late is it?”

Zefra hesitated, and then said, “The others have already eaten, but we saved you some. Come, sit by the fire.”

Erik reached out and grabbed her arm. “Please, I have to get back in there. I have to see the rest. He stopped the lesson at a very bad spot.”

Zefra shook her head again. “Erik, it hasn’t just been a few hours. It’s been a whole day since you went in there with me. You need to rest, and you need food.”

Erik frowned and looked at the others. “And none of them gave you a hard time with me being locked inside a magical tower for a day?”

“Well,” Zefra began, “Lady Arkyn gave me some trouble for a while, but your grandfather was able to convince her to wait. Good thing you came out when you did though, because she was only going to wait until tomorrow morning.”

“I see,” Erik said. “All right, a quick bite to let them know I’m good and healthy, and then you open the next lesson for me.”

“Only on condition that after this one you rest at least for a day before you go further,” Zefra said.
