“And so the game progressed, with players from each team grabbing the ball and running toward the goal, only to lose the ball to the other team just before scoring.

“‘Throw it to me! Throw it to me!’ shouted an excited Nenookaasii, as he darted from tree to ground and back to tree again.

“Finally, the ball was lying loose on the ground while Mooz the moose and Zhagaskaandawe the flying squirrel scuffled.

“Seeing his chance, Nenookaasii buzzed down and scooped the ball into the head of his stick. He flew up toward the sun and then, reversing course, flitted down to the surface of the lake. As the animals of the earth dashed toward him, he darted to a nearby blueberry bush, then flew quick circles around the opposing players while making his way down the field. At last, Nenookaasii touched the goalpost with his stick and shouted, ‘Point!’

“The hummingbird, one of the smallest members of his team, had won the game for the animals of the sky. You don’t have to be the biggest or strongest or bravest player to win the game. You only need to know your strengths and play to them. Just like Nenookaasii did.”

Travis nodded and smiled, but he couldn’t keep his eyes open. He drifted off to sleep, dreaming of animals playing the Creator’s Game.
