Throughout the latter half of this century, cancer has been the most dreaded disease. At least 75% of the patients with whom I have personally worked have wanted to die before they developed cancer. Usually this is the result of depression because of a problem with a love relationship.

But what about the 25% of people who seem to have a remarkably positive attitude and so much for which to live? Although they weren’t ‘wanting to die,’ they almost invariably had major psycho-social stresses. My own belief system is that cancer, as with all other illnesses, is always a multifaceted disease. That is, there tends to be, at least in some families, a predisposition toward cancer. This means that there may be a genetic weakness in the immune system.

There is no question that chemical pollution of various sorts predisposes people to cancer, as do cigarette smoking and excessive exposure to radiation, as well as chemotherapy for other forms of cancer.

I believe that someday we will have ‘proven’ that there is usually, if not always, a virus involved in precipitating the onset of cancer. And finally, the personality, the belief system of the individual, along with the total reaction to life stresses will be recognized as the precipitating final straw.
