Chapter Twenty

We both woke up before dawn with the thought of food playing on our minds and stomachs. The length of time seemed much longer than the two days since we had last eaten, and we were determined to do something about it.

The only way we could possibly eat was to catch something that we could cook on an open campfire and I must admit that the idea didn’t really appeal to me. However, hunger is what hunger does and we really had no choice.

Bob, with his years of shooting practice was eager to get going, and so, leaving the camp behind we once again set out on safari. Neither of us had any idea where we were going or, for that matter, what we were going to catch, but with hunger pains rumbling in our stomachs we just had to find something.

Following the same track that we had followed the previous day, we walked for maybe an hour, sitting down at regular intervals to take a rest from the sun and to also allow Bob to play with the gun and think that he was Ned Kelly.

Unlike the first time, we were quiet, no singing, giggling, or laughing; hunger was the number one priority and gave us added urgency. Out of the blue, we suddenly spotted something moving in the distance and both of us dropped to our knees so that the scrub would give us some sort of cover. Bearing in mind Bob’s expertise in shooting, we needed to get as close to whatever it was to even be in with a chance of shooting it. I should point out that although I had tried shooting the rifle a few times, my shots were about on par with Bob’s, and so, I gave him the right to be the hunter, if for no other reason than it gave me the opportunity to show off my prowess at sarcasm whenever he made a cock-up.

There was also another reason in letting him keep the rifle, the thought of killing something didn’t appeal to me. I was more the animal lover type of person. I kept both of my reasons to myself and as most of the sarcasm fell on deaf ears, I reasoned that there was no reason in telling him.

Half crawling, we moved forward with our eyes focused on the spot where we had spotted ‘the thing’ move. We slowly crept up to the possible target and were both quite surprised to find that it wasn’t one but more like one hundred and one or more targets and all edible. We had chanced upon a flock of sheep, roast lamb on legs! There were just two obstacles to contend with, the first being who was going to shoot one, and the second being who was going to carve it up!

I had already decided that I would leave both of those delights to Bob whilst I appointed myself as head chef and would do the cooking. The nearest I had
