Melody shrieked as the gentle slope she and Wyatt had been skiing on became a little too steep. Wyatt laughed as he slid up next to her. She glanced at him out of the corner of her eye but didn’t dare take her eyes off the snow.

“It’s barely even an incline,” he teased. “Come on, city girl, you can do it.”

“I’ve been on skis before,” she retorted. “I have been here two whole years.”

“Oh, I see.” The twinkle in his eyes sent flames of desire licking through her body. “Have you been skiing with a lot of other people?”

“By people, do you mean other guys?” If he could give her a hard time about her skiing abilities, or lack thereof, then she could make him work for the information he was after.

“Maybe.” He dug his poles into the snow and pushed hard, sending him racing through a packed section of snow.

“Then the answer is no. It’s been a while since I’ve skied, with anyone. What about you? Have you stumbled over any ski-bunnies since you came home?”

“Nope. I usually stay on the ranch. Since we met, I’ve been off the ranch more times than ever, at least since I got back from being overseas.”

“What was it like? Where were you again?”

“Afghanistan. We called it ‘The Sandbox’. It’s a hot, miserable desert. Hell on earth. Literally.”

“What made you want to serve?” She pushed forward, trying to catch up to him.

“I love my country. I thought I could help. And honestly, I wanted to see the world. I got what I wanted, I guess.” The dejection in his tone hurt a place deep within her. Even her bear sighed for him.

“What happened over there? Holly mentioned you got hurt.”

“She’s always one of the worst gossipmongers,” he muttered.

“I don’t think she does it maliciously. There’s not a whole lot to do in town, so people get up in each other’s business. It’s small town entertainment.”

“I guess.” He stopped and waited for her to catch up. “Let me know if you want to rest a minute.”

“I’m good,” she lied. Her lungs burned and her thighs were jelly, but she wasn’t about to admit it to him. He hadn’t even broken a sweat. Hauling around all those bales of hay did more than just give him a tight butt, he must have lungs of steel too. “If you don’t want to talk about it…”

“What happened to me and my unit wasn’t unusual or special. We didn’t do our job right, so we got blown up. I got lucky. Sometimes I’ll have a bit of a limp, but it only seems to happen when it’s really cold outside. Minus twenty or more. I was out the other night trying to fix a broken fence and about froze my ass off. If my bear had any dexterity, I would have shifted and let him do the job.”

“I’m sorry that happened to you.”

“You didn’t cause it so there’s nothing to be sorry about,” he snapped. His jaw twitched as he averted his gaze.
