CHAPTER 10
1965 4,310-Mile Convertible
“WHAT COLOR TOP DOES IT HAVE?”
By Kevin Mackay
There was a doctor, a neck and head surgeon, whose car I worked on, and it took him three or four years to decide where to take his car. He decided to bring it to me eventually, but before he sent it down from his home in upstate New York he asked that I come up to see the car and meet him. He always called me Mr. Mackay, and I could tell by the way he spoke that he was a very unique individual.
I went to his house, which was very well groomed, everything was in place. I walked in the door, and before I was allowed to go into the house I had to take off my shoes. So I took off my shoes and left them on the doormat. All his floors were high-polished mahogany wood. I thought he was in the Marines; the house was absolutely spotless.
He said, “I want you to come into my bedroom first.” I look at the guy. He’s serious. So I went into his bedroom, he opened this big cabinet and pulled out a three-ring binder. It’s got every piece of documentation, every receipt, all his research, everything you can think of including letters written to General Motors when the guy was 21 years old. He bought a green with black leather 1965 Corvette with fuel injection, whitewalls, knock-offs, and a 4-speed. Everything. Every piece of documentation, even gas receipts were in the binder. The car had 4,310 original miles and had its original tires. I was completely blown away.
I said, “I’d like to see the car now, and call me Kevin.” He said he has to call me Mr. Mackay. Okay Doc, no problem. So we went in the garage. He said, “Mr. Mackay, go get your shoes, carry them through the house, then sit here on this bench and put them on and we’ll go in the garage.”
I got my shoes, put them on, followed him into the garage, and I saw the car’s all covered up. I said, “Let me help you take the cover off.”
He said, “Mr. Mackay, don’t touch the car cover. I’ll take it off.”
I looked at him and said, “Doc, you want me to work on the car, I gotta help you take the cover off. You don’t want me to touch anything, but how am I going to work on the car?”
He said, “I’m sorry; you’re right.”
It turned out that he had three covers on the car. Three car covers on one car! It took him probably 15 minutes to take them off. He folded those car covers like you would fold an American flag at a funeral.
After the third car cover came off, and we folded it like an American flag, I looked at the car. He had handkerchiefs wrapped around the wiper blades so the blades wouldn’t touch the glass, with three rubber bands wrapped around each one. He had handkerchiefs wrapped around the door handles.
