“Homecoming”

Cordelia leaned back into her chair at the Bronze and took a sip of her drink. To the average person just wandering in, it would seem as though nothing had changed since that time last year, when Cordelia had been hanging out at the club with Mitch Fargo. There was Cordelia, sitting right in the center of the action, impeccably dressed, settling into the arm of a studly guy.

But Cordelia knew a lot had changed since then. Her senior year at Sunnydale High had been totally unpredictable. For starters, the hottie who was currently nuzzling her long, slender neck wasn’t the captain of the baseball team, the basketball team, or even the tennis team. No, Cordelia’s new guy was Xander Harris.

No one had found it harder to believe that Cordelia could be attracted to Xander than Cordelia herself. But their intense fighting eventually turned to intense smooching, and now the two of them were an item. At first Cordelia had been petrified that her friends would find out about her relationship with him, but lately she’d decided that didn’t matter. As Cordy had explained to her friends, “I’ll date whoever the hell I want to date, no matter how lame he is.”

Some of those friends had found that too hard to bear. But Cordelia didn’t mind. Despite her misgivings, she was constantly finding herself more drawn to the Scooby Squad. Cordelia herself had slain a few vamps and found it gross, scary, and oddly compelling.

Cordelia wasn’t the only new vampire warrior at Sunnydale High. Recently a new slayer, Faith, had arrived at the Hellmouth. Faith was sort of the anti-Buffy. She was wild, forceful, and seemed to have no loyalties or emotions whatsoever. Cordy wasn’t sure how she felt about Faith. She was totally brave, sure, but could you trust someone so . . . goth?

Senior year hadn’t only been a banner year for Cordelia. As she looked out onto the dance floor, Cordy could see Willow bopping joyfully to the sounds of the Bronze’s hottest new band, Dingoes Ate My Baby. Willow’s new stud-man, Oz, was the lead guitarist. Cordelia had to admit that Oz was kind of cute—in that punk-rock werewolf way. Cordy herself wasn’t into guys who howled at the moon. But for someone like Willow, well . . . a guy who turned into a werewolf was better than no guy at all. Besides, Willow helped Oz restrain himself on nights of the full moon, so that worked out okay for them.

Cordelia looked over toward the coffee bar, where she saw Buffy chatting with Scott Hope, an extremely smoochable member of their senior class. Buffy was pretending going through the motions with Scott, but Cordy could tell the Slayer was distracted—as usual. In fact Buffy had been distracted for months, ever since she’d had to slay Angel in order to seal the mouth of Acathla and stop the world from certain destruction. Scott was cute enough, certainly not Cordy-worthy, but fine for Buffy. And he did
