“Too bad,” Nick said. “It’s your safe now.”

“Even the contents?” John asked.

“Don’t get your hopes up,” Nick told him. “Chances are it’s empty anyway.”

“It doesn’t matter to me, Dad. Once I get it open and have a combination to go with it, I could stand to make a hefty profit when I sell it again.” John noticed that the auction people had taped a SOLD sign onto the safe with John’s name on it. He promised them that he’d have it picked up no later than tomorrow and left the arena with Nick.

The following morning in their office, John started making a few calls to find a specialist to get the safe open. Most places that he called said they got out of that end of the business years ago since there was so little call for it these days. However, the last two places that John tried both told him that it would cost him approximately four hundred fifty dollars to send a man over to open it. Even then, they had told him, they might not be able to ascertain the combination and that if he closed it again, he’d have to start over getting it open again. John thanked them both and hung up his phone, disappointed by the prospect that he may end up having to pay someone to haul the safe away. So that’s why no one else bid on it, he thought.

Nick looked over at his obviously disheartened son and said, “I take it you didn’t get good news.”

John shook his head. “No, Dad, you were right; I shouldn’t have bought it. I’d never be able to make a profit selling it. Do you know anyone who’ll come and haul it away for me?”

“Not so fast, there, Bunky,” Nick said. “Don’t give up just yet. I may have one more trick up my sleeve. Let me call a guy I know and see what he can do for you.”

“You know a guy?” John said. “Why didn’t you say something earlier when you saw me calling all those other people?”

“Because the guy I know is not exactly operating above board,” Nick said. “Before he got busted he was a professional safe cracker. He just got out of prison six months ago and promised the authorities he was all done with that sort of activity.”

John frowned. “Then what makes you think he’ll help you out?”

“Because he owes me,” Nick said. “I put in a good word for him on his release and helped him get his present job. I couldn’t hurt to ask; all he can do is say no.” Nick looked in an old address book that he kept in his bottom desk drawer and looked up the number for Anthony Atkins and found it on the A page with a Hollywood phone number. He got through to him on the third ring.

After Nick had hung up his phone, John stepped over to Nick’s desk and said, “Well, will he do it?”

“He said he’d do it if we didn’t tell anyone else about it,” Nick said.
