Playing fairly
Sharing is something that all children have to learn, and the best way to achieve this is to ensure that your child has regular opportunities to play with other children. Up to the age of two years children tend to spend much of their time playing alongside each other, not with each other. It is only during the third year that they begin to show signs of participating in play with other children. During this stage of development arranging short play dates with only one or two other children will make it easier for you to teach your child about sharing and taking turns. It is also easier to control things when there are fewer children, therefore avoiding tears and tantrums. Choose friends carefully, avoiding children who are aggressive and unruly. Sometimes it can be a good thing to invite a child who is slightly older and has learnt the importance of give and take while playing.
Prepare your child in advance by talking about getting out the toys he thinks his friends would like to play with. If during the play date your child gets possessive about a particular toy another child is playing with, do not force him to give the toy back to the child. Instead take the other child aside and find him something special to play with. Young children hate being ignored and you will find that this way your child is much more likely to offer to give the toy back than if you try to force him to do so. When it comes to snack time encourage your child to offer the biscuits to his guests first, and remember always to express your pleasure and approval when he shows consideration towards others. A star on his star chart on the days he has played nicely with his friends will also go a long way towards encouraging good behaviour.
