"No. Under absolutely no circumstances, no," Ackerman said. They were all standing outside the interrogation room where Martin was being held, Greer and Norman on one side of the door with Ackerman, Hawton and Dawson on the other. Maddlan kept a neutral stance in the middle. Ackerman kept pointing a finger at Greer's chest.

"You're not going inside. No one enters this room except for us three and her," he gestured to Maddlan. "If I allow any of you two in there I'm compromising this whole investigation and I couldn't give a flying fuck about Martin's health evaluation if that was the case."

Maddlan nodded along. "I have to take Ackerman's side in this. You can't enter the room."

"Are you joking? How the hell am I supposed to evaluate anything if I can't see him? This is ridiculous." Greer looked to Norman for backup.

Ackerman took a step closer. "Be happy we're even considering letting you do this," he hissed. "Or should I have someone show you another door?"

"Fine," Greer sighed. "Can we see him from here then?" he looked to the observation room behind them.

"Yes. And this is as close as you get," Ackerman nodded as if to approve their entry. Norman went first followed closely by Greer, Maddlan and Hawton.

Ackerman leaned over to whisper to Agent Dawson, who then proceeded to make sure the interrogation room was securely locked. Ackerman entered the observation room last, whilst Dawson remained outside.

Greer felt as if the air was knocked out of him, and he could see Norman's eyes welled up by the sight they were met with. There, right in front of them, sat Gerard Martin, like a caged animal. He looked perfectly normal, a bit tired maybe, but nothing was physically wrong with him as far as Greer could tell. Yet it was painful to see him there, on the wrong side of the table. What in the world made him do this, Greer thought.

Martin was of course not aware of their presence behind the one-way mirror. He sat there looking normal as ever, staring into the steel door opposite him. Norman wanted to knock, to make him aware she was there, but she knew she couldn't. She'd gotten them this far. Now she hoped Greer could come up with something, anything, to make this go their way.

"All right, Agent Greer. Evaluate," Ackerman held a hand out to the glass, inviting Greer's professional opinion of the suspect on the other side. Greer swallowed as he approached the glass.

"And if you so much as touch the glass you'll be headed out of this field office instantaneously. Preferably through a window."

"What exactly happened when you entered, Ms. Maddlan?" Greer's eyes were fixed on Martin. Everything seemed ordinary, Martin was just sitting there, waiting.

"Nothing happened, absolutely nothing. He was sitting like this, and after I'd gotten Lloyd out of there I tried to talk to him." Ackerman snorted at the sound of his first name. "But he didn't react, not a word, not a glance. Like I wasn't even there.
