The Quarters Of The Magistrate's Daughter

Rain pattered against the Sanctuary, cold and insistent. Evun said by daybreak, it’d taper off, but after rain for so long I only half-believed her. Maybe it was the gloomy mood around the dinner tables. You could feel the tension in the air. Every sword-of-arms knew who was about to leave for Aeskhos’s games, like the night before an execution. Even Yagger’s tail stilled against the stone. With Gin out of the way though, I had to admit, I was probably the only one digging into the bean soup.

All my worries had been lifted. She was the only one in my party that couldn’t defend herself.

“Everything is prepared,” Evun whispered as she filled my cup of spirits. I toasted it to her and downed the rest of it. We’d heard horror stories from the slave ships that weren’t The Executioner. With zero knowledge about our future travels, we had to eat and sleep while we could.

“Think you’ll be able to sleep?” I bit into a piece of bread and gestured at Yagger and Nökorth.

“One with jokes,” Nökorth replied and Yagger remained silent. Yeah, it’d be a long night.

We were marched off to our sleeping cells, but I didn’t see how staring at a dark ceiling for hours would’ve helped out anything. I was back to my old habits from Seven’s Outpost, unable to sleep a wink. Evun couldn’t visit me, that was fine, I’d visit my new friend.

“Where do you think you are going, Glad-ee-ator—?”

I held up my hands in a shrug. “It’s my last night, isn’t it? Last chance to find Tuskpoint in those maps.”

The guards were on edge, but they weren’t stupid. Taking a long look between each other, they nodded in agreement and let me pass. I bypassed the next hallway though and stepped back to the kitchens. With the rain, the guards were hurrying up to their corners as fast as we were. The only ones remaining were the overworked servant girls.

“Hey, gorgeous,” I murmured and Evun jumped.

“Should you not be in bed?”

“I figure I’ll head down to visit a winged friend.” I grabbed a nagel, no sugar, and bit into it. We had rations with fruit and it felt so good to bypass that. “If it’s my last night here for a while, I figure a proper goodbye’s in order.”

Evun took one long look at me, and half-a-smile raised on her lips. “You were not the only one with the thought.”

I paused. “Cuqee?”

“Who else?” Passing jars over to someone, Evun laid a hand on my hip. “I do not know what you did to the daughter of the magistrate, but I am with fright.”

“Fright, huh? Why’s that?”

“Do you keep memory of the haughty woman of royalty from our journeys together?” She brushed her curls away and slipped her leather band over them, bringing them up. “I could not imagine she would have scrubbed the raft, much less hold conversations with one of the creatures of the river. And here she runs in, breathless and begging for fish to feed something that could devour her whole.
