My gaze saw no mere mortal on the day

I found in your fine eyes quiet like none

on earth, so pure I saw therein the One

who storms my soul with love—a soul like its own.

And weren't my spirit drawn from God's alone,

earth's outward beauty had left it so aglow

that it longed for nothing. Mirage, all that! And so

it soared to the universal form straightway.

When one lives—truly lives!—his will won't mesh

with mortality; nor are things eternal cast

in the mould of time. For skin and bone, no haven.

Untamed desire's not love, just a flush of flesh,

and it kills the soul. Our honest love makes fast

friendships on earth. Death, faster though, in heaven.
