Chapter Fifteen

Regina eased up on the gas when she realized the Jetta was doing seventy. She didn’t know the exact statistical probability of a state trooper patrolling the highways between two tourist towns, but she guessed it was high. There were plenty of soft shoulders and tree stands along Highway 550 that could provide great cover for a speed trap.

She chastised herself for not paying attention to her speed. No doubt Steven Wade Pearlman’s same lack of attention had made her an orphan.

She couldn’t remember much about her parents’ death. She’d been too young and in shock. Her strongest vision was their departure that night to visit a sick uncle in a rural part of Montana. She’d been left with the neighbor. It was only for a night, her mother had assured her. She’d watched through the front room window as they’d left in the old Datsun. The rain was pouring outside, but they’d both waved as they got into the little car for what would be their final journey. They hadn’t realized that one-fourth of all crashes occurred during inclement weather.

The neighbor had awakened her early the next morning. She’d immediately known something was wrong. Standing in the bedroom doorway had been a state trooper. She couldn’t remember what was said, and much of the next few weeks—the funeral, the packing of the house, the move to Boston with Aunt Mimi—became random images lost in her fight to remember her parents waving goodbye on that night.

She swallowed hard and glanced at the mountains for strength. She’d decided to drive to Ouray for the rest of the day as a way to escape Sloane. She didn’t want to see her any time soon as she was incredibly angry for many reasons. She hated lying to Lenny. She hated that Carlotta and Sloane were trying to destroy Pru’s dream, but most of all, she hated that Sloane was right—a Wilderness Campaign could solve Pinedale’s economic problems. Lenny couldn’t save the town and keep Pru’s Curious Curios afloat. At this point, she wasn’t doing either very well.

She’d never been to Ouray, population nine hundred and fifty. The town was less than a square mile, but during the winter and summer it bustled with tourists. Nicknamed the Switzerland of America, Ouray sat against the head of a mountain and was buttressed on three sides by sheer rock walls that cupped the ancient buildings and homes.

Seth would absolutely love this place. She’d read about the trails that hovered above the town, providing a bird’s-eye view of the entire community.

Her phone rang. He must be reading my mind. It was nearly seven in Boston, and she wondered what he had planned for the evening.

“Hi, honey,” she said cheerily.

“You sound happy,” he joked. “That must be some conference, or you’re just happy to be away from me.”

“Never,” she said. She bit her lip. I can’t even tell him about this place. I hate lying to him, too. Somehow that’s Sloane’s fault as well.

“So, how’s it going?
