Parable of the Talents, Octavia Butler, 1998

In this sequel to Parable of the Sower, Butler continues the story of Lauren Oya Olamina, her disapproving daughter Larkin, and Earthseed, the religion Lauren founded. The new religion teaches that God is change and that our destiny is to live among the stars. The story is set in the near future of a war-torn United States whose religious crusader president resorts to fascism and totalitarianism. Christian thugs take over Lauren’s town and turn it into a re-education center similar to a concentration camp. Parable of the Talents was the 1999 Nebula Award winner.

Ringworld, Larry Niven, 1970

Nessus, a member of an alien species known as “Pierson’s Puppeteer,” organizes a mission to explore a “ringworld”—an enormous ring nearly a million miles wide with a circumference of 600 million miles that’s constructed around a star. All together, the ring’s surface area is 3 million times the surface area of Earth. Nessus recruits two humans and another alien to join the expedition. Shortly after arriving near the Ringworld, their spaceship is disabled and crashes. The four explorers must find a way to get their ship back into space and set out across the Ringworld. Ringworld won the 1971 Hugo Award.
