The two kinds of pagan rituals are known among Wiccans and many other pagans as Sabbats and Esbats. Sabbats are related to the sun and occur at eight specified times throughout the year. Four of the Sabbats are based on ancient Celtic festivals, and the other four are based on the solstices and equinoxes, which mark the first days of the four seasons. As such, the Sabbats are basically fixed days from year to year, varying at the most only by a day or two.

Oracle

Although astronomically the seasons begin with the solstices and equinoxes, to pagans, the solstices and equinoxes actually represent the midpoint of each season. So, in pagan terms, winter begins on October 31, and the solstice represents the middle of winter. The same is true for the other seasons: Spring begins on February 2, summer on May 1, and autumn on August 1.
