The “Hole”

Sometimes a weak square is called a “hole.” Think of it this way: When pawns are side by side, they control all the squares in front of them; but when one advances ahead of another, there is a hole in the pawn structure because that square can no longer be controlled by a pawn. Diagram 6 gives an example of such a hole. White’s knights occupy two of Black’s weak squares; c5 and e5. The c5 square is not a hole because Black could eventually play his pawn to b6 and control c5. But the e5 square can never again be controlled by a Black pawn, so it is a “hole” in Black’s pawn structure. The white knight has a splendid post on this weak square, where it controls squares deep in Black’s position.
