Let’s assume that you have written the introduction of your life in developing the college admissions essay. It is not too wordy, it is creative, it is heartfelt, it is funny, and it describes your personality to the proverbial “tee.” What happens next? How do you follow through and keep the remainder of the essay strong? Believe it or not, you have a number of options that allow you to develop an essay body that will suit you perfectly. The first step in this process is to remain focused. Without a clear focus, your essay is likely to go off track as quickly as it began — just as when you verbally relate a story but allow too many side comments. This kind of derailment is fatal, as it is often incredibly difficult to go back and figure out just how or why you jumped the rails in the first place. Therefore, you should do your best to develop the body in the same way you developed the introduction: with a little flair and finesse. Your commitment to the essay in its entirety is what will get you through the writing process staying on track and keeping your message clear.
Because you have already established a specific tone during the introductory portion of the essay (with which you are especially satisfied), your best bet in completing the essay is to hold that voice throughout the remaining paragraphs. If you continue to develop your work with the same tenor and style, your attention to the project will be obvious to the admissions committee, and they are likely to view your essay favorably. These paragraphs might be looked upon as the DNA that holds the entire body together; if you have not lost your focus and continue on the same voice-path as the introduction, your demonstration of well-directed and controlled creative energy remains strong, thought-provoking, and sincere.
A good example can be found in the wounded-student essay previously described. There is a powerful, attention-grabbing introduction, but the tone and voice of the essay must remain consistent throughout. In case you are a little unclear as to what I am saying here, reread that opening. In your mind, think of the typical old black-and-white detective movies, wherein the narrator speaks tersely and pulls no verbal punches: Bang. I fell into the stairwell. My ears rang and my leg and side burned like hell. The concrete was cold. I tried to get up but felt numb. The speaker is abrupt, to the point, and maintains a sort of sarcastic sneer that echoes in his delivery and choice of words.
No matter how brilliant that introduction, that essay would have been ruined, shot through the heart, and fallen down into the stairwell right along with its author, if he had suddenly decided to try to sound intellectual or soft-hearted: I found myself thinking about my beloved Angie, and how she had always begged me not to come down this street after dark. Oh, how I wish I had listened.
